Ferrera Park

Chapter 7/10 · Avilés

This is Ferrera Park, the great green lung of the town. With about eighty-one thousand square metres, it is the largest and most used of the parks of Avilés, and it is right in the centre. For centuries it was the estate of the Marquises of Ferrera, behind their palace. The town council acquired it for public use, and King Juan Carlos the First opened it in May 1976.

It has two very different parts. One is the English-style park, with meadows, a pond and wooded areas with centuries-old trees: yews, cedars, pines, oaks, birches, chestnuts. The other is the French Garden, with pergolas, fountains and boxwood patterns. Woody Allen filmed some scenes of Vicky Cristina Barcelona in this park.

On the pond you can usually see ducks, geese and swans. There is a playground for children and a music pavilion. According to the town council, the park opens at seven in the morning and closes at eleven at night. Wander without hurry. When you are ready, we leave by the gate on Calle Galiana.
