Antón Museum

Chapter 3/10 · Candás

We have reached the Candás Sculpture Centre, the Antón Museum, opened in 1989 in the 18th-century manor house of the Estrada family. It is dedicated to Antonio Rodríguez García, known as Antón, a sculptor and painter born in Candás in 1911.

Largely self-taught, in 1931 he went to Madrid, where he studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. The Civil War cut his career short: he was shot in 1937, aged only 26. His family donated the work that survived, with pieces such as Mi Güela, and the gardens hold open-air sculptures.

From the gardens we head up towards San Antonio, where some old cannons are waiting for us.
