Cambaral neighbourhood
Chapter 5/8 · Luarca
We go down through the Cambaral quarter, a seafarers’ neighbourhood of stepped houses with picturesque architecture, where time seems not to have passed.
Its name is explained by a legend with no date. According to the legend, Cambaral was a pirate chief who was captured and locked in the fortress of La Atalaya. They say he fell in love with the daughter of the lord of Luarca, that they fled together and were discovered at the harbour. But the official chronicler of Valdés says there is no historical reference to that pirate and that the name points to a place abundant in crabs. It is a legend, not a historical fact.
We continue to the quay.
