University of Oviedo (historic building)

Chapter 4/9 · Oviedo

We are in front of the historic building of the University of Oviedo, on San Francisco street. The university began teaching on the 21st of September 1608, fulfilling the will of Archbishop Fernando Valdés Salas, who had died in 1568.

The building suffered a serious fire during the revolution of October 1934, which destroyed part of the archive, and it was rebuilt afterwards. Today the university has seven campuses and nearly 19,000 students.

Now let us go to the monumental heart of Oviedo: the cathedral.
