Chapel of El Valle
Chapter 2/9 · Pravia
This is the Chapel of El Valle, in the Güeyu quarter, one of the oldest buildings in Pravia. It is medieval in origin and was rebuilt in the 14th century. Outside it is simple and whitewashed, with stone steps and a bell gable, and it stands against the old rectory, now a home for the elderly.
Inside it holds one of the great Renaissance treasures of Asturias: the altarpiece and the image of the Virgin of El Valle, patron saint of Pravia, holding the Child, all in painted terracotta. It is dated 1569 and attributed to the Italian sculptor Giovanni Battista Portigiani, of the school of Donatello. In September Pravia celebrates the feasts of the Christ and of the Virgin of El Valle.
Now we cross the town to the Town Hall square, the oldest part of Pravia.
