Chapel of the Holy Cross and dolmen

Chapter 4/7 · Cangas de Onís

We are at the Chapel of the Holy Cross, in Contranquil. On a dolmen from around 3000 BC, King Favila had a chapel built in the year 737. That is what the Principality of Asturias records.

The present chapel and mound are a reconstruction: the building was destroyed in the Civil War. Under the floor of the hermitage you can see the megalithic burial chamber. Both the chapel and the dolmen were declared a monument in 1931.

We go down towards the Market Square and the Cortés Palace.
