Church of St Peter (Campo Valdés)

Chapter 6/9 · Gijón

Church of Saint Peter, at Campo Valdés, looking out over the sea and the Muro promenade. It is Gijón’s historic parish church.

The earlier building was destroyed in nineteen thirty-six, during the Civil War. The first stone of the reconstruction was laid on the twentieth of May, nineteen forty-five.

Beneath and beside this square lie the Roman Baths of Campo Valdés, a High Imperial complex turned into a site museum; it opened to the public in nineteen ninety-five. From here you see the western start of San Lorenzo beach. We step down a few metres to the Muro.
