Main Square and City Hall
Chapter 4/9 · Gijón
Main Square. Here stands the City Hall of Gijón, at the gateway to Cimadevilla.
The plan for this square dates from eighteen fifty-eight; the town hall was finished in eighteen sixty-five. It was only partly arcaded: not all four sides were closed. Today it is a cobbled pedestrian space, a stage for proclamations and festivals such as Begoña’s Big Week.
We climb a little further to Plaza de Jovellanos. There awaits the birthplace of Gijón’s most famous Enlightenment figure.
