Plaza del Fontán
Chapter 7/9 · Oviedo
We are in the Plaza del Fontán. Its name comes from the spring, the fontán, which fed a lagoon that was here. The lagoon was drained on the 19th of August 1523, and in 1559 a wash-house and a fountain were built.
Next to the square is the covered market of El Fontán, from 1885, and today the area has bars and a small market.
Now we head north through the old town to find the city’s oldest fountain. It is the longest stretch of the walk, about 800 metres.
