Foncalada fountain and the Cider Boulevard
Chapter 8/9 · Oviedo
This small stone building is the Foncalada fountain, from the 9th century. Tradition attributes it to King Alfonso III, although today it tends to be placed in the reign of Alfonso II. It is one of the few pre-Romanesque civil buildings that survive, and it is considered the oldest civil monument in continuous use in Spain, which is hard to verify. Its name derives from the Latin fonte incalata, the form in which it appears in a document of 1096.
A few steps away begins Gascona street, the Cider Boulevard, one of the most popular streets in Oviedo and in Asturias, full of cider houses. It is a good place to try Asturian cider.
From here we return to the park where we began. It is about 640 metres, the second longest stretch.
