Chapel of the Conception and La Torre Palace

Chapter 8/12 · Villaviciosa

At the end of Calle del Carmen stand the Chapel of the Conception and the Palace of La Torre de la Pedrera, which belonged to the Peón family and formed one of the finest palace ensembles in Asturias in the first half of the 17th century. The chapel was designed in 1622 by the architect Juan de Naveda, and its elongated plan imitates that of the Descalzas convent in Valladolid, by Francisco de Mora.

Look at its very vertical front: a single doorway with Baroque mouldings, above it a large window, the coat of arms and, crowning it all, a bell gable with one opening, a pediment and stone balls. It was looted during the Civil War and remained closed to worship until its restoration. The palace, Baroque and symmetrical, has a round-arched doorway between two Doric columns, and today belongs to the El Escanciador cider factory.

We go back a few steps towards Calle de Santa Clara.
