Medieval Wall and Caleyina de les Indies
Chapter 7/12 · Villaviciosa
Between the Plaza del Ecce Homo and the Caleyina de les Indies, a fragment of the medieval wall survives. The plaque says it plainly: «Fragment of the wall granted by Alfonso X the Wise, founder of the Puebla de Maliayo. Year 1270». That wall had battlements and four gates, and the town grew by adapting to its line.
In 1484 a fire destroyed the town, and the Catholic Monarchs helped rebuild it with fifteen thousand maravedís a year for fifteen years and a Sunday market. Villaviciosa also lay on the Coastal Way of Saint James. Look at Calle del Sol and Calle del Agua: rows of houses with galleries, projecting eaves, wooden balconies and many coats of arms.
We continue south to the end of Calle del Carmen.
