Market Hall

Chapter 11/12 · Villaviciosa

This is the Market Hall, or Plaza Cubierta, an example of iron architecture. It was built between 1901 and 1904 and opened in 1905, designed by Juan Miguel de la Guardia, the municipal architect of Oviedo, who also built the covered markets of Gijón and Mieres. Its metal structure was made by the Duro Felguera company.

Because the iron carries the weight, the walls can be filled with large windows. It has a rectangular plan of about 34 by 47 metres, four symmetrical façades, each with a large doorway and a triangular pediment, and inside, an open space with richly decorated cast-iron columns. It was thoroughly renovated in 2024, with solar panels. Besides the daily stalls, it hosts the weekly Wednesday market, a very old tradition.

We return to the Town Hall Square.
