King Silo Monument
Chapter 7/9 · Pravia
This is the monument to King Silo, in marble, signed by Valentín Sabiote in 2009. The pedestal reads: Silo, king; Pravia, capital of the Asturian monarchy, 774 to 783.
Silo came to the throne in 774 through his marriage to Adosinda, daughter of King Alfonso I, and moved the court from Cangas de Onís to Pravia, an old Roman settlement in the Nalón valley, beside a Roman road. He lived in peace with the Muslims, and from his reign survives the Diploma of King Silo, from the year 775, the oldest known written medieval document in the Iberian Peninsula. He died in Pravia in 783; a few years later, Alfonso II the Chaste moved the court to Oviedo.
Next to the statue there is a replica of the labyrinth stone from the church of Santianes de Pravia, which Silo had built. According to the plaque, starting from the S in the middle you can read Silo princeps fecit, Prince Silo made this, in a thousand different ways.
Now we walk over to the Collegiate Church.
